Seventh-ranked Norwegian tennis player Casper Ruud has shared his expectations for former world #1 Rafael Nadal and current world #1 Novak Djokovic's performances at the 2024 French Open.
“Despite the fact that Novak has had a bit of a down year, I still think he is the favourite. He is the No. 1 seed, so if there is anyone who knows how to find his peak form at the right time, it is probably him. Of course, I have to mention Rafa as well. He is not seeded and maybe does not play at the same level as he used to on clay. But if he is physically fit, I would not call him a dark horse. In my opinion, Nadal is one of the favourites, given his past success here. His resume at Roland Garros speaks for itself.
Ruud elaborated on Nadal's prowess on the clay courts of Paris. "Rafa has won this tournament 14 times, it's just an incredible achievement. Even though he's not the dominant force he once was, you can never rule him out, especially at a tournament he's so comfortable and confident playing on. The conditions and the surface seem to suit his game so well. I'm sure he'll be extremely motivated to try and add another French Open title to his legacy.
As for Djokovic, Ruud acknowledged the Serbian's ability to perform at his best when it matters most. "Novak has shown time and time again that he can elevate his game in the most important moments. Even when he's not 100 percent, he finds a way to win. That's what makes him so dangerous. If he's healthy and playing his best tennis, I think he's probably the man to beat."
However, Ruud was quick to point out that the field is as deep and talented as it has ever been. “There are so many great players capable of winning this tournament. Guys like Jannik, Carlos, Daniil – they are all hungry to win that first Grand Slam title. It will be an incredible battle, and I am sure the fans will experience two exciting weeks of tennis.”
