After his victory in Geneva, Norwegian tennis player Casper Ruud, world No. 7, expressed his gratitude to his sponsors and jokingly asked if his prize was ready. “It’s always an honour to win a title, but it’s the support of my team and sponsors that really makes it possible,” Ruud said at the post-match press conference. “Without them, I wouldn’t be able to compete at this level. So I’m very grateful that they believed in me.”
Ruud took the opportunity to poke a little fun at his supporters. “I hope the check is ready, because I’m ready to cash it!” he said with a smile. “No, seriously, the financial support is extremely important. It allows me to focus on my training and my performance without having to worry about the business side of things.”
Earlier it was announced that in the first round of the French Open Ruud would face Brazilian player Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves. Originally the Norwegian was supposed to play against Czech Jakub Mensik, but he withdrew from the tournament.
Ahead of his opening match at Roland Garros, Ruud expressed confidence but also respect for his opponent. "Felipe is a young, talented player who is improving quickly. I know I can't take him lightly. But I feel good about my game and I'm ready for the challenge.
Ruud has firmly established himself as one of the best clay court players on the ATP Tour. His triumph in Geneva marked his third career title on the surface. Now he will look to translate that success to the biggest clay court stage of all at the French Open.
“This is the tournament I’ve dreamed of winning since I was a kid,” Ruud said. “I’ve come close before, but I’m more motivated than ever to try and lift this trophy. It won’t be easy, but I’ll give it my all.”
With his recent good form and wealth of experience on clay, many will consider Ruud a title contender in Paris. But the Norwegian is keeping his feet on the ground, focused only on taking things one match at a time.
